Is CMHS and Animal Control the same organization?
No. CMHS is a private nonprofit organization. While Animal Control houses animals here, we are two separate entities.
Can CMHS come pick up an animal?
No. If you have or witness any issues pertaining to cats and dogs in the community, call Animal Control at 573. 449.1888.
How do I become a volunteer?
The animals at the CMHS need love and attention. Our staff stays busy cleaning and caring for the animals, so we rely on volunteers to socialize our animals. Because our dogs and cats need consistency, we require that volunteers dedicate at least 5 hours a month for at least 5 months. Volunteer hours are between 12 and 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. If you would like to dedicate your time to helping our shelter animals, please stop by and pick up a volunteer Inquiry Form. Click here to learn more about the volunteer program.
How do I become a foster parent?
Foster parents truly are lifesavers! When an animal comes down with a minor illness, or we are simply running tight on space, we rely on dedicated foster parents to help us out. If you have space and love to give, we will provide the rest. To get started all you need to do is fill out an application and meet with one of our foster coordinators. Click here to learn more.
Do the animals at CMHS have a time limit?
No, the Central Missouri Humane Society allows animals as much time as it takes them to find a home. Sometimes this can mean several months or even a year. If an animal stays in the shelter for a long period of time, we will work with foster parents so that the animal can get a brake from being in the shelter.
Can you call me if you get in a specific breed?
We get this one a lot. We understand the desire of a specific breed, and we’re glad that you are choosing to adopt a dog rather than buy, but unfortunately we are unable to call you if we get in a specific breed. All of our dogs are on a first come first serve basis, so we encourage you to check back often. You can always check our website too- www.cmhspets.org
Are Animal Control and the Central Missouri Humane Society the same thing?
No. Animal control is responsible for protecting the people and animals in Columbia. They assist with lost animals, and with animal related issues. If your animal is picked up by Animal Control, you will reclaim them at the CMHS, however you must contact animal control- they are the only ones who are able to help you reclaim your pet.
