Special Announcement from the CMHS Board of Directors

January 18, 2012

Letter to the Community:

Unwanted and abused pets face a tremendous challenge in our world, and Columbia, MO, is no exception. But thanks to caring citizens, generous businesses and concerned community leaders, the Central Missouri Humane Society (CMHS) is providing humane care and better futures for thousands of animals who have suffered in the wake of a difficult economy. As the only open door shelter in this area that promises food, kindness and veterinary care, CMHS took in 5,442 animals in 2011.

As we begin this new year, our board and staff wish to thank local animal lovers who answered our year-end plea for donations to feed and care for our animals – since CMHS is primarily supported by contributions and receives no funds from national humane organizations. We particularly want to thank Darwin and Axie Hindman who demonstrated their personal commitment in a letter that generated increased support for the animals. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the City of Columbia, our 105 foster care providers, rescue organizations, Columbia Second Chance, local pet care businesses and media that showcase our animals, and volunteers who fulfill multiple roles in an organization with a small staff. Our staff found permanent homes for 2,131 animals in 2011, sent 557 to rescues and maintained 50 at any given time in foster care. CMHS continues to be completely transparent regarding numbers, which are posted on our website.

We know many in the community support our efforts to reduce the unwanted pet population, increase adoptions, and reduce euthanasia that is the result of limited shelter capacity. Here’s what you can do:

• Spay and neuter your pets and any strays that come your way and encourage others to do the same. CMHS, in cooperation with the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, will soon begin a program to spay and neuter as many animals as possible to encourage adoption; we also provide low-cost spay/neuter services to those who need assistance.

• Serve as a foster home while our staff works hard to find permanent homes.

• ADOPT!! Or help us increase adoptions by providing opportunities to show off wonderful pets.

• Review the CMHS strategic plan located on our website and share our commitment to top quality care and a shelter with increased capacity that reflects the level of concern for animals that can be a hallmark of this community.

• DONATE! Check out our website at CMHSpets.org to find multiple ways to support the shelter.

• If your circumstances don’t permit adoption, help a friend adopt. Since it costs CMHS an average of $175.80 to support an animal, we do have to charge adoption fees to maintain the shelter.

• Remember CMHS when you are fundraising for community organizations, honoring a friend or a beloved pet, or doing your estate planning.

We hope you will visit the shelter at 616 Big Bear Blvd. as we work together to make it a place of promise for a better future for all animals that enter its open door.
